On September 21, the Sustained Dialogue on Peaceful Uses (SDPU), facilitated by CRDF Global, is partnering with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and delegations from the United States and Senegal to host the “Atoms for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” side event at the United Nations (UN) Summit of the Future.
The side event will focus on the role of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, science, and technology as a tool to address the effects of climate change and other challenges of the future. Additionally, the side event will cover innovations in nuclear science and technology that will help address SDGs such as food security (SDG 2), good health (SDG 3), access to water (SDG 6), clean energy (SDG 7), and ocean health (SDG 14). The side event will consist of a keynote presentation from Dr. Lisa Randall, Harvard University, on the role of science in addressing SDGs, a video presentation from the IAEA on their approach to addressing climate change-induced challenges through science and technology, and a panel discussion. Moderated by Dr. Randall, the panel discussion will include contributions from Dr. Najat Mokhtar of the IAEA, Ambassador Bonnie Jenkins from the U.S. Department of State, Minister Birame Souleye Diop of Senegal’s Ministry of Energy, Oil, and Mines, Dr. Miriam Mutebi from Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dr. Sasha Rubel from Amazon Web Services.
The side event will begin at 9:45 AM EDT and conclude at 11:00 AM EDT. It will take place at the UN headquarters in room CR1 in New York, NY, USA. All with valid UN grounds pass or approval to obtain a Special Event Ticket are eligible to participate.
The SDPU is jointly funded by the U.S. Department of State and the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. For more information on the SDPU, please visit www.sustaineddialogue.com.
