Last week, CRDF Global, as the facilitator of the Sustained Dialogue on Peaceful Uses (SDPU) initiative, coordinated with Wilton Park, the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP), Dalberg Group, and the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) to implement the workshop Accelerating Sustainable Development in Africa: Scaling up Peaceful Nuclear Uses.

The conference took place from May 1 – May 3 in Franschhoek, South Africa and gathered experts from across the globe to discuss emerging nuclear energy opportunities and peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology in Africa. Discussions covered many topics including frameworks for the introduction of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology, workforce capacity building, and nuclear technology applications in cancer care and water desalination. Speakers, panelists, and attendees contributed to the dialogue that we hope can shape comprehensive next steps for achieving sustainable development goals through peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology.

We thank all who organized and participated in the conference and IAEA Director General Rafeal Mariano Grossi for his virtual opening remarks. The SDPU is jointly funded by the U.S. Department of State and the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
