On August 9th, 2023, the Sustained Dialogue on Peaceful Uses (SDPU) initiative hosted a side event at the Preparatory Committee Meeting on the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT PrepCom). Titled The SDPU: A Renewed Pursuit of the UN SDGs Through Nuclear Science and Technology, the side event was held in-person at the Vienna International Centre in Vienna, Austria. Reaffirming progress made during year one of the SDPU, the event focuses on expanding the discussion around access to nuclear science and technology as a development tool in agriculture, environmental resource management, and healthcare. Participants engaged in discussions on the progress and outlook of the SDPU with the aim of building connections for future SDPU programming. Key contributors to this agenda included Mr. Shota Kamishima of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Dr. Baffour Awuah of the Ghana Ministry of Health, and Engineer Muna Gharaibeh of the Water Authority of Jordan.

These overarching discussions focused on how the SDPU supports progress on United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) throughout its programming, including:

  • Goal 2. End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture
  • Goal 3. Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
  • Goal 6. Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
  • Goal 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all
  • Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation
