Sustained Dialogue
on Peaceful Uses
Building a more sustainable future for all
with nuclear science and technology
Achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a global community will require applying all the tools we have at our disposal. To this end, recognizing the essential role that nuclear technologies play in serving the world’s energy needs and supporting sustainable development more broadly is crucial to success. Central in this endeavor to creatively leverage the peaceful atom for development and prosperity has been the diligent work of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Since the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) came into force more than 50 years ago, cooperation on the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology has grown tremendously. The Sustained Dialogue aims to support continued progress and the right of all to the benefits of the peaceful uses of nuclear technology as enshrined in the NPT. We collaborate with and complement the work of the IAEA by creating a cooperative and engaging environment to cultivate greater awareness of where nuclear technologies deliver the greatest impact in our shared pursuit of the SDGs.
Participant Driven
The Sustained Dialogue aims to expand the conversation on peaceful uses of nuclear technology and identify opportunities for enhancing access to such technology in a manner guided by the interest of those engaged in the dialogue. With a participant-driven approach, the program brings together diverse stakeholders including national policy makers, the private sector, and the broader international development community. These participants from around the world will drive the discussion so that, as a global community, we can find ways for nuclear science and technology to most effectively serve our shared interest of sustainable development.
Serving Sustainable Development
Nuclear technologies are vital components of the global toolkit of technology that we can use to improve the human condition, build a more hospitable world, and achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. Our immediate focus is helping to highlight and tackle these nine SDGs where nuclear science is currently poised to make a direct contribution while continuing to explore new applications and technologies. To facilitate constructive outcomes, the dialogue will begin by promoting the use of nuclear science via three themes: improving healthcare outcomes, addressing climate change, and increasing food security.
